1021 AND 1023 SOUTH MAGNOLIA, SOUTH PASADENA

1021 and 1023 S. Magnolia, South Pasadena, CA  (2004)

The two houses were constructed in approximately 1885, both as single-family residences. They are historically significant as two of the oldest houses in South Pasadena. Although somewhat altered, both houses retain many of their original character-defining features, including original windows, doors, shiplap and other patterned siding, roof lines, and porches.

HHP completed construction in May 2004. The completed homes were sold to two South Pasadena households who had both been long-time renters in the neighborhood.

HHP moved the houses from their original locations on Meridian Avenue to Magnolia Street in South Pasadena in February 2003, and the houses were set on their foundations in April of 2003.

The two bedroom house located at 1023 Magnolia Street was sold to a family of three who had been renters for over 25 years of a house on Hope Court, just one-half block from their new home. The family was selected through a competitive process carried out by HHP in conjunction with the City of South Pasadena.

The two bedroom house located at 1021 Magnolia Street was sold to the family of two who began renting the home in 1964 when it was located on Meridian Avenue. The family was relocated during the move and rehabilitation. Having never owned a home before, the renters became homeowners in January of 2004.
